It is most often sourced from soy beans, although it can also be extracted from other plant sources such as sunflower and cabbage. PS is produced through a series of extraction and purification techniques to isolate the compound from its natural plant sources. The process involves first crushing and grinding the soy beans to create a fine powder, which is then mixed with water and enzymes to break down the components of the cell wall. The resulting mixture is then separated into different layers, with the PS-containing layer collected and further purified using methods such as centrifugation and chromatography.
