What is Bromelain?

Bromelain is basically a group of enzymes that can be extracted from the stem and fruit of the pineapple plant. The active ingredients present in bromelain are proteases and proteinases, the enzymes that help in the break down of proteins. Bromelain enzyme has been used for various health conditions for years. Now-a-days retailers are also selling it as skin cream as well as health supplement.

History of Bromelain Enzyme

Native to central and South America, pineapple has long been in use as an effective medicinal plant. In 1891, Vicente Marcano, a Venezuelan chemist isolated bromelain for the very first time by fermenting pineapple fruit. Later, in 1892, Elliott P. Joslin, Frank Sherman Meara, and Russell Henry Chittenden coined the name ‘bromelain’ after conducting further investigation.

Bromelain can be measured in gelatine digesting units (GDUs) per gram. An ideal dose of the substance is between 80 to 400 mg per serving, twice or thrice a day. However, it is advised to consult your doctor to know the dose that is suitable for your health condition.
