Griffonia is a woody climbing shrub native to West and Central Africa, known for its small green pods and black seeds, which are valued for their natural 5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) content. It belongs to the Fabaceae (legume) family and thrives in tropical rainforests, savannas, and riverbanks. The plant has been used traditionally in African herbal medicine and is now widely cultivated for its nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications.Today, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, and Nigeria are the major producers of Griffonia, where it grows wild and is also cultivated in controlled conditions. This hardy shrub can reach up to 3 meters (10 feet) in height and produces greenish flowers that develop into seed pods containing dark brown to black seeds. The harvesting season typically falls between October and March, when the seed pods mature and turn brown. Harvesting is done manually, as farmers collect the pods, remove the seeds, and dry them naturally before further processing. The dried seeds are then exported or used to extract 5-HTP, which is widely used in dietary supplements and functional health products.
