Production & Sourcing

Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) is a low-growing, evergreen shrub native to North America, particularly in Canada and the United States. It belongs to the Ericaceae (heath) family and thrives in cool, acidic forest soils, woodlands, and mountainous regions. Wintergreen is well-known for its aromatic leaves, which contain methyl salicylate, a natural compound with analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been traditionally used by Native American tribes and in herbal medicine for pain relief, respiratory support, and digestive health.Today, Canada, the United States (especially the Appalachian region), and China are the major producers of wintergreen, where it grows wild and is also cultivated for its essential oil production. This small creeping shrub typically grows 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) in height, featuring leathery green leaves and small, bell-shaped white flowers that develop into bright red berries. The harvesting season for wintergreen falls between July and October, when the leaves reach peak oil content. Harvesting is done manually, where leaves are carefully collected and then steam-distilled to extract wintergreen essential oil. The oil is widely used in pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements, topical pain relievers, and flavoring agents. The dried leaves are also used in herbal teas and traditional remedies.
