The production of horsetail begins with the seedling stage where the seeds are sown into a mix of peat and sand. The seedlings are then transplanted to fields that have been plowed and well-drained. These fields should also have a pH level of 5.5 to 6.5 for optimal growth. Horsetail typically grows in moist, shaded areas, but can also tolerate some sunlight.
The harvesting of horsetail is done in the summer when the plant is at its peak growth and before the spores develop. The aerial parts of the plant, including the sterile stems and fertile cones, are harvested by hand using scissors or knives.
