It requires a warm and humid climate to grow, and is commonly found in tropical regions of Africa, India, and the Caribbean. The plant can also thrive in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. It is typically harvested during the dry season when the pods are fully mature and dry.
The seeds of Mucuna pruriens are the most desired part of the plant. They are extracted from the dried seed pods by breaking them open and removing the seeds by hand or using a mechanical sheller. After extraction, the seeds are cleaned, sun-dried, and then roasted to make them safe for consumption. In some cases, the outer cover of the seeds may be removed before roasting to improve the flavor and make it easier to digest.
