Muirapuamine is the major active component present in the stem of this plant. This plant is well-known and traditionally used in herbal medicine. Alkaloids, phenolic compounds, fatty acids, and fatty acid esters are major bioactive components present in this plant. It is also a good source of potent antioxidants like luteolin, caffeic acid, and ferulic acid that provide protection against harmful oxidative stress. This herb is good for many health benefits.

Muira Puama is typically wild harvested from the Amazon rainforest, where the tree is endemic. It is important to ensure sustainable harvesting practices to prevent over exploitation and damage to the delicate ecosystem. The root bark and stem bark of Muira Puama are the most commonly used parts of the tree and are harvested when the plant is in bloom, which usually occurs in the rainy season (December to March).
