Notoginseng is mainly grown and harvested in the Yunnan province of China, where the climate and soil conditions are ideal for its growth. The plant typically takes three to four years to reach maturity and is harvested in autumn. The roots, which contain the active medicinal compounds, are carefully dug up, cleaned, and dried before being used in herbal preparations.
In recent years, the demand for notoginseng has increased, leading to its cultivation in other parts of China, as well as in other countries. However, the Wild Notoginseng Protection and Utilization Project in Yunnan aims to protect the wild-growing notoginseng, as it is believed to have a higher potency and efficacy than cultivated varieties.
