Vitamin A is a fat-soluble nutrient that is found in both animal and plant sources. It is produced synthetically in the form of retinyl palmitate or retinyl acetate, which are commonly used in supplements and fortified foods. The majority of the natural food sources of vitamin A are in the form of retinol, found in animal products, and beta-carotene, found in plant sources.
The primary animal sources of vitamin A include liver, eggs, and butter. Plant sources rich in beta-carotene include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and broccoli. Some fortified foods also contain added vitamin A, such as milk, cereals, and margarine.
