Cayenne pepper is a vibrant red, moderately hot chili pepper that comes from the Capsicum annuum species. It has been cultivated for centuries and is believed to have originated in Central and South America. Today, it is primarily grown in countries such as India, China, Mexico, the United States, and Spain, with India being one of the largest producers. The cayenne pepper plant is a perennial shrub in tropical climates but is often grown as an annual in temperate regions. It reaches about 2 to 4 feet in height and produces slender, elongated peppers that turn bright red when fully mature. Harvesting typically occurs in late summer or early fall, where the peppers are either hand-picked or machine-harvested. Once collected, they are dried and ground into a fine powder or used fresh for culinary and medicinal purposes.
