Gervão, a perennial herbaceous plant, is native to tropical and subtropical regions, particularly found in South America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa and Asia. It belongs to the Verbenaceae (verbena) family and thrives in warm, humid climates with well-drained soils. Gervão is well-known for its bitter-tasting leaves, which contain flavonoids, iridoids, and alkaloids that contribute to its anti-inflammatory, digestive, and antimicrobial properties. Traditionally, it has been used in Brazilian and Caribbean herbal medicine for liver health, digestive support, fever reduction, and respiratory relief.
Today, Brazil, Colombia, India, and some African nations are the main producers of Gervão, where it grows wild and is also cultivated for medicinal use. This upright-growing shrub reaches 60–120 cm (2–4 feet) in height, featuring serrated green leaves and slender spikes of small, purple to blue flowers.
The harvesting season for Gervão falls between late summer and early autumn, when its leaves and stems reach peak phytochemical content. Harvesting is done manually, after which the plant is either air-dried for herbal tea formulations or extracted into liquid tinctures and powders. Gervão is widely used in herbal medicine, dietary supplements, and functional teas for its liver-protective, diuretic, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
