L-Carnitine is a non-essential, branched amino acid that can be produced by the body, with its synthesis depending on two other essential amino acids, lysine, and methionine. Deficiency in certain nutrients like ascorbic acid, ferrous iron, pyridoxine, and niacin can potentially impact carnitine levels in the body. Although it can be produced internally, carnitine is also found in dietary sources, primarily from animal products. In certain situations of high energy demand, the body's production might not meet the requirement, making L-carnitine a conditionally essential nutrient.
