Turkey Tail Mushroom, also known as Trametes versicolor or Yun Zhi in Chinese, is a type of polypore mushroom commonly found in temperate forests around the world. It can be found growing on dead logs and branches of various trees, such as oak, chestnut, and elm trees. Despite its name, Turkey Tail Mushroom has no actual relation to turkeys.
Turkey Tail Mushroom is a popular functional food and has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine and Native American cultures. Today, it is widely cultivated and harvested in markets all across the world, including North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
The production of Turkey Tail Mushroom involves a combination of traditional methods and modern techniques. Cultivation of this mushroom is done through a process called "bag cultivation", in which bags filled with sterilized sawdust and grain are inoculated with Turkey Tail Mushroom spores. The bags are then placed in a controlled environment with proper temperature, humidity, and light conditions. After a couple of weeks, the mushroom will start to grow and can be harvested within a few months.
Aside from cultivation, Turkey Tail Mushroom can also be foraged from the wild. However, this method is not as reliable, and the mushroom must be carefully identified to ensure it is the correct species.
