Also known as holy thistle, legalon, Marian thistle, Mary thistle, silibinin, silybin, silymarin, and St Mary thistle belongs to the family Asteraceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe. Silibinin, silychristin, and silidianin are the three major active components that are collectively called silymarin present in seeds of milk thistle. It is a good source of potent antioxidants. This herb has many health benefits.

Other countries that also cultivate Milk Thistle include China, India, and Brazil. The plant is typically grown in large fields and harvested in the summer months when the seeds are fully ripe. The seeds are then dried before being used for various applications.
