Potassium chloride (KCl, or potassium salt) is a metal halide salt composed of potassium and chlorine. It is odorless and has a white or colorless vitreous crystal appearance. Potassium chloride powder is a crystalline form of potassium salt commonly used as a dietary supplement or a salt substitute. It is composed of potassium and chloride ions and is often used to replenish potassium levels in the body or to replace traditional sodium-based table salt. The solid dissolves readily in water, and its solutions have a salt-like taste. Potassium chloride can be obtained from ancient, dried lake deposits. KCl is used as a fertilizer, in medicine, in scientific applications, domestic water softeners (as a substitute for sodium chloride salt), and in food processing.
Main Producing Countries |
Belarus, Canada, Germany and Russia

Product Use |
Potassium chloride (KCl), an inorganic salt, is extracted from underground deposits of sylvinite ore or naturally occurring brine deposits. The primary method of production involves electrolysis of potassium chloride brine using mercury amalgam or membrane cell processes, resulting in high-purity KCl exceeding 99%. Alternatively, potassium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid or potassium carbonate and hydrochloric acid can also produce KCl.
Major global producers include Canada, Russia, Belarus, Israel, and Germany. Canada leads with about 35% of global supply, followed by Russia with approximately 26%, and Belarus with around 10%.
