Production & Sourcing

Senna (Senna alexandrina) is a small shrub native to North Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent. It belongs to the Fabaceae (legume) family and thrives in arid and semi-arid regions with sandy, well-drained soils. Senna is well-known for its pinnate leaves and yellow flowers, which produce sennosides, bioactive compounds responsible for its natural laxative properties. It has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic, Unani, and traditional herbal medicine for digestive health and relief from occasional constipation.

Today, India, Sudan, and Egypt are the primary producers of Senna, where it is both wild-harvested and commercially cultivated for medicinal use. The plant typically grows 60–100 cm (2–3 feet) in height, with slender stems and small, pod-like fruits containing seeds.

The harvesting season for Senna varies by region but typically occurs between October and March when the leaves and pods reach optimal levels of sennosides. The plant is hand-harvested, and the leaves and pods are sun-dried before being processed into herbal teas, extracts, powders, and pharmaceutical formulations. Senna is widely used in dietary supplements, herbal laxatives, and traditional digestive remedies worldwide.
