Also called Curcuma aromatica, belongs to the family Zingiberaceae. It is native to tropical South Asia. The major bioactive component of Turmeric roots is curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin. Curcumin is responsible for its bright yellow color. Atlantone, tumerone, and zingiberene are present in volatile oil, which has great pharmacological activity. Turmeric is well-known species for its flavor and color. Turmeric is rich in antioxidants that provide protection against free radicals. It has many health benefits. Intake of Turmeric or direct application is good for heart, skin, brain, and joint health.
