Witch hazel is a deciduous shrub native to North America and parts of Asia. It belongs to the plant family Hamamelidaceae and is scientifically known as Hamamelis virginiana. The plant is also commonly referred to as winterbloom or snapping hazel. Witch hazel shrubs grow between 3 to 5 meters in height, thriving in temperate forests, moist woodlands, and riverbanks. The plant is known for its bright yellow, ribbon-like flowers, which bloom in late autumn to early winter, making it unique among many flowering plants.
The harvesting of witch hazel typically occurs from September to December, when the leaves, twigs, and bark are carefully collected. These plant parts are then distilled to extract the tannin-rich liquid or dried and ground into powder for herbal and cosmetic applications. The extract and powder are widely used in skincare products, herbal remedies, and pharmaceutical formulations due to their astringent and soothing properties.
